Sharon documentation

Reading, highlights, and notes

The page comes first; controls appear only when you need them.

Reader controls

Tap the page to show or hide the reading controls, and swipe to turn pages. The bar at the bottom shows your place in the book; tap it to go to a specific page. Text and page settings live in a separate Reading appearance sheet so they never cover the text.

Highlighting

Select text with the usual iOS gesture, then choose Highlight. This works in EPUB books and in PDFs that contain text.

In Ninth Planet books the selection menu offers only Highlight, with no copy or share. A protected book saves a highlight's position and color but not the selected text, so its highlights appear in lists without text.

Edit and list highlights

Tap a saved highlight on the page to change its color (yellow, green, blue, or pink) or delete it. In EPUB books the same sheet also lets you add a note to the highlight.

Choose Contents in the toolbar, then Highlights, to see the book's highlights in reading order. Tap one to jump to it, swipe to delete it, or long-press it to change its color or delete it. This section appears once the book has at least one highlight.

Bookmarks and notes

Tap the bookmark button in the toolbar to bookmark the current page; tap it again to remove the bookmark. Long-press it to open Bookmarks & notes, where you see what you saved and can add a note to the current page. This works in EPUB and PDF, and PDF bookmarks also appear under Contents, in Bookmarks.

PDF page thumbnails

In a PDF, choose Contents, then Pages, to see a thumbnail of every page; tap one to go there. A thumbnail carries a badge when its page has a bookmark or a highlight.

Scanned pages

When a PDF page is a scanned image with no selectable text, choose OCR highlight in the toolbar. Sharon reads the page on screen on your device; draw a box around the lines you want with one finger, or tap a recognized line, then confirm the highlight from the card that shows the recognized text. While this mode is on, move the page with two fingers.

In your personal files, Extract text shows the page's full text, with optional cloud reading after you sign in and consent.

Your account and My notes & highlights

When you are signed in, highlights, bookmarks, and notes in Ninth Planet books, EPUB and PDF alike, are saved to your account and appear on your other devices. Changes made offline sync when you are back online. Highlights and notes in your personal files stay on your device and are not uploaded to your account.

Once signed in, open My notes & highlights from Reader's corner: one screen with your highlights, notes, bookmarks, and saved words from every book, grouped by book, with search and filters. Tap an item to open the book at that place, or swipe to delete it. Each personal book is marked On this device · not synced.

Current limits

A PDF highlight cannot carry its own note; add your note to the page from Bookmarks & notes instead. OCR highlight works one page at a time and is not a full selectable text layer. My notes & highlights does not export notes.
